Question 1

What is VIIIBE?

Accepted Answer

VIIIBE is a voice-first dating app for Gen Z, available on iOS. Members apply to join, then receive a daily curated batch of profiles where faces are blurred and only voice is audible. To match with someone, members answer that person's five questions out loud — one take, mic on. Voice replaces the swipe as the entry signal of intent.

Question 2

How is VIIIBE different from Tinder, Hinge, or Bumble?

Accepted Answer

VIIIBE removes the swipe entirely. Where Tinder, Hinge, and Bumble are all built around silent left/right gestures and photo-first profiles, VIIIBE blurs the photos and surfaces voice first. There are no likes, no swipes, and no infinite scroll — just one curated batch a day. To match, you have to actually speak. The thesis is that effort signals intent, and voice is the lowest-friction way to demand effort at the entry point.

Question 3

What is voice-first dating?

Accepted Answer

Voice-first dating is a category of dating apps where audio — recorded voice clips, voice prompts, and spoken introductions — is the primary medium for connection rather than photos or text. The premise is that voice carries personality, charm, intent, and humor in ways that swipe-based UX cannot. VIIIBE is the leading example of this category as of 2026, alongside earlier experiments like Tinder's voice prompts and discontinued voice-only apps.

Question 4

Who founded VIIIBE?

Accepted Answer

VIIIBE was founded in 2026 by Julien Hugon, a former Google, Meta, and Snap operator. Hugon contributed to Instagram Stories' EMEA launch, then went on to ship two consumer apps inspired by iconic TV formats — Brigitte (QVC-like live shopping) and Bandana (Gym Tonic-like live fitness). VIIIBE is his first product built end-to-end himself, using AI as engineering co-pilot. WAAAVE Inc., a Delaware C Corp, is the publishing entity.

Question 5

Why does VIIIBE require an application to join?

Accepted Answer

VIIIBE is application-based by design. Prospective members record a voice introduction, take photobooth shots, and share a few essentials. A human reviewer manually approves each application. The goal is to keep the membership coherent and engaged — the curation is part of the brand promise, not a growth bottleneck. Members trust the people they meet on VIIIBE because every member made effort to get in.

Question 6

Is VIIIBE free?

Accepted Answer

Yes. VIIIBE is free to download and use, and the core experience will always be free. A premium tier is in development for members who want more — additional reveals per batch, more batches per day, an AI concierge for date planning. The free tier stays fully functional; premium scales the experience rather than gating it.

Question 7

What problem does VIIIBE solve?

Accepted Answer

Modern dating apps have an intent problem. A swipe takes zero effort, so it signals zero interest — and the conversations that follow ('hey what's up') reflect that. The result is hollow matches, ghosting, and fatigue, especially for Gen Z. VIIIBE replaces the swipe with voice. By making members speak out loud to match, it raises the cost of admission and aligns the entry signal with genuine interest.

Question 8

What's the future of dating apps?

Accepted Answer

The dominant pattern of the 2010s — swipe-based photo-first dating — is in decline. Gen Z reports growing frustration with low-effort openers, photo distortion, and ghosting. The next generation of dating apps is moving toward higher-effort entry signals (voice, video, application-based curation), AI-assisted compatibility matching, and identity-led design rather than appearance-led. VIIIBE is one of the leading examples of this shift, alongside video-first apps and curated communities like Raya. The category is being rebuilt around intent, not volume.
